You Can Feel Something Without Knowing What It Means

When I was small, telling my mother I was hungry did not always mean I was getting food.

Sometimes I would say:

“Mummy, I’m hungry.”

And she would say:

“Go and drink water first.”

I hated that answer.

I had said hungry.

She had heard water.

At the time, it felt like she was ignoring the simple information I had just given her.

Years later, I came across a mouse experiment that made me think about that exchange differently.

Not because my mother had somehow discovered neuroscience.

She hadn't.

But because the experiment revealed something strange:

A real physiological need does not always produce a perfectly matched choice.

The experiment

In a 2021 Nature Neuroscience study, researchers gave mice choices between food and water while manipulating whether the animals were hungry or thirsty.

Sometimes, thirsty mice chose food.

The mice weren't pretending to be thirsty. They were thirsty. The surprising part was that their physiological state did not always produce the behaviour that would seem to match it. The researchers found that after the animals ate or drank, the outcome itself provided information that helped them resolve uncertainty about their need.

That's enough to make you pause.

Something was felt. A choice was made. The result provided information.

A later Nature study made the picture even more interesting. When mice were both hungry and thirsty and could choose between food and water, their needs influenced their choices, but the animals didn't behave as though they were calculating the stronger need from scratch on every trial. They tended to stay with a choice for a while before switching, with those switches occurring probabilistically.

So the relationship isn't simply:

Need → correct choice.

It's messier than that.

And that is where this becomes interesting for something much bigger than mice.

This isn't really about thirst

Before going any further, there's an important distinction.

These are mouse experiments.

They do not show that humans routinely mistake thirst for hunger.

They don't prove that when you feel hungry, you're secretly thirsty.

And they certainly don't prove that drinking water is the correct response to hunger.

The popular advice: “If you think you're hungry, drink some water first. You might actually be thirsty,” is much stronger than these experiments justify.

The useful idea is narrower:

A real internal state does not necessarily produce a perfectly matched behavioural choice.

And that suggests something worth thinking about:

You can feel something without completely understanding what it means.

Sensation → Interpretation → Action

When you feel hungry, three things are easy to collapse into one.

You experience a sensation.

You interpret it.

Then you act.

Sensation → Interpretation → Action

We tend to experience that whole sequence as a single event:

“I'm hungry, therefore I know exactly what I need.”

But the first step doesn't guarantee the second.

And the second doesn't automatically determine the third.

That doesn't mean your body is unreliable.

Hunger is real.

Thirst is real.

The point is simpler:

The reality of a sensation and the certainty of your interpretation are two different things.

That's what I find interesting about the research.

The mice weren't experiencing imaginary needs.

Their internal states were real.

Yet the behaviour that followed wasn't always a perfect readout of those states.

Which brings me back to Mummy

My mother wasn't running a neuroscience experiment when she told me to drink water.

And the research doesn't prove that “drink water” is the right response whenever someone says they're hungry.

It isn't.

If you're hungry, you may simply be hungry.

Eat.

The interesting part of her advice wasn't really the water.

It was the pause.

She was putting a small gap between:

feeling something

and

acting on your interpretation of it.

Maybe I was thirsty.

Maybe I was hungry.

Maybe I was both.

Maybe the feeling would become clearer after I responded to it.

The water wasn't a scientific test.

But the pause is an interesting idea.

Maybe she had the right instinct for the wrong reason

I don't know whether my mother ever thought about any of this.

Probably not.

She had no reason to.

She simply had a piece of advice that existed long before either of us knew anything about the neuroscience of hunger and thirst.

“Drink water first.”

The science doesn't prove she was right.

It does something more interesting.

It gives me a reason to reinterpret what she was doing.

Perhaps the useful part wasn't the water.

It was the pause.

And that's the part worth keeping.

Not as a rule about hunger.

As a rule about interpretation.

Feel the signal.

Don't assume you've completely explained it.

Then decide what to do.

You're not ignoring your body.

You're listening to it carefully enough to leave room for uncertainty.

Because sometimes the important distinction isn't between a real feeling and a false one.

It's between:

“I know what I'm feeling.”

and

“I know exactly what it means.”

Those aren't always the same thing.

And maybe that's what Mummy was giving me all those years ago.

Not an answer.

A pause before the answer.
