Every couple has done it.
"I'll have what you're having."
It feels like an ordinary decision.
One shared dinner becomes a weekly routine. Then the same grocery list. The same takeaway order. Before long, you're eating many of the same foods without giving it a second thought.
That's what happens when two lives become one.
But scientists are beginning to ask an intriguing question:
If couples gradually start eating the same foods, could they also be shaping their gut microbiomes in similar ways?
More Than a Shared Plate
We often think of eating as a personal choice.
In reality, it's one of the habits we share most.
Partners influence what food comes into the house, what gets cooked for dinner and what ends up on each other's plates. Over time, these small, everyday decisions can make couples' diets surprisingly similar, a pattern that has been observed in research on spouses and social eating behaviours.

Inside your digestive system lives a vast community of microorganisms called the gut microbiome.
These microbes help digest food, break down dietary fibre, produce certain vitamins and interact with your immune system. Like any living community, they respond to the environment they're given.
One of the strongest influences on that environment is your diet.
Researchers have shown that changing what people eat can alter the composition of their gut microbiome within days, while long-term dietary patterns help shape which microbes become established over time.
In other words, your diet is helping to shape your gut microbiome every single day.
So What Happens When Couples Eat the Same Foods?
This is where the story becomes interesting.
Studies have found that people living in the same household often have gut microbiomes that are more similar than those of unrelated people living apart.
There isn't one simple explanation for this.
People who live together share much more than meals. They share homes, routines, environments and countless daily exposures, all of which may influence the microbes they carry.
But because diet is one of the strongest known influences on the gut microbiome, scientists think shared eating habits are likely to contribute to those similarities, alongside other shared lifestyle and environmental factors.
So while researchers cannot say that sharing meals alone makes couples' gut microbiomes become more alike, the idea is biologically plausible and consistent with what we currently know about diet and the gut microbiome.
The Good News Is That Healthy Habits Spread Too
Here's the encouraging part.
If couples naturally influence each other's eating habits, healthier choices can spread too.
You don't need a complicated diet.
You don't need expensive supplements.
Instead, start with the meals you share most often.
Add another serving of vegetables.
Choose whole grains more frequently.
Include beans, lentils and other fibre-rich plant foods regularly.
These foods provide the dietary fibre that beneficial gut microbes use as fuel, helping support a healthier and more diverse gut microbiome.
Small choices repeated over time are what become lasting habits.
And because many of those meals are shared, those healthier habits may benefit both of you.
You're Sharing More Than a Meal
Relationships shape us in countless ways.
