A Hungarian herding dog named Coconut became an overnight internet sensation after her owner accidentally dyed her pink using human hair conditioner.
Ella Hart, 55, shared photos of the pastel-pink pup on Reddit, where the post quickly amassed over 7,000 upvotes. The caption read: "This is what happens when you don’t read the instructions."
Hart told Newsweek she had used a "red-enhancing" conditioner meant for human hair, assuming it would have little effect on Coconut’s white coat. Instead, the four-year-old dog emerged from her bath with a vibrant pink hue that lasted four months; despite repeated washes.
Walks with Coconut in Toronto drew strong reactions. Children squealed in delight, treating the dog like a living stuffed animal, while some disapproving dog owners shot disapproving looks. At least three passersby asked Hart if the color was natural.
"I found it hilarious. My partner, less so," Hart admitted.
Veterinarians warn that human hair products can disrupt dogs' skin pH levels, potentially causing irritation. Coconut suffered no harm, but Hart now stresses the importance of pet-safe grooming products labeled "pH-balanced for dogs" or "veterinarian-approved."
This isn’t the first accidental pet makeover to go viral. Last month, a Labrador in the U.K. turned blue after swimming in a freshly dyed pond.
Coconut has since returned to her natural color, but her pink phase lives on in internet fame. Hart says she’ll "definitely read the label next time."
