Atlantic Bluefin Tuna That Can Rake In Millions Spotted Off St Ives

A school of atlantic bluefin tuna was spotted launching themselves into the air off the coast of Cornwall.

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is known for its high market value which means they can sell for thousands – even millions – of pounds.

Their extortionate price tag makes the bluefin the most valuable fish in the world but also it is illegal to catch them in the UK.

If the endangered species are caught by accident, they must be immediately returned to the sea.

Peter Nason, 37, was volunteering at St Ive's National Coastwatch Institution when he spotted the tuna diving out of the water one after the other, putting on quite a spectacle for the onlooking crowd on October 23.

According to Cornwall Live, this isn't the first time bluefin tuna have been spotted in Cornish waters. In fact, in August this year a huge fish - believed to be a bluefin tuna - was spotted near Porthcurno.

This particular species of tuna is the largest in the world. These torpedo-shaped fish are built for speed and power and travel huge distances in the open ocean.

They can grow to a maximum size of three meters and weigh up to 250 kilos.

They are endangered, and were absent from Cornish waters for nearly a century - only reappearing in the last decade.

Now they are regularly seen in the summer and autumn. Tuna are not dangerous to humans and eat other fish.

Unlike most fish, they are warm-blooded with heat generated in their powerful swimming muscles that enable them to accelerate rapidly and give them improved cognitive power and reactions.

They are incredible predators and are at the top of the oceanic food chain.
