This Fish With Built-In Suction Cup Is Baffling Social Media Users After It Sticks To A Surface For A Long Time
We Know that every animal is special, but the recent viral video that showed a fish with built-in suction cup has taken this uniqueness to another level, leaving many social media users in total disbelief.
The video shared by Maine lobster fisherman Blake Haass on July 12 reveals a fish with an extra feature — a suction cup that enables it to stick to surfaces.
This is not the first time fishermen have caught such a fish. In fact, Hass said: “A lot of the times in the summer we catch these lump fish that have these suction cups on the bottom side of them”.
“If you stick them up to a flat surface, they can actually stick for quite a while,” he explained.
In the clip which can be viewed here, Haass showed precisely how it works by sticking the fish to a metal compartment on the boat.
The fish remained there till the end of the video.
In the video which has since gone viral on Tiktok, Haass can be heard saying: “They say it's good luck to kiss them on the lips before you throw them back, so that's what I did.”
In a subsequent video, he is seen doing exactly that by pecking the fish straight on the lips prior to tossing it back to the boat.
After his fans continued to ask him more about the fish, he shared another video which showed him as he pecked the fish, only for him to be bitten on the lip by it.
The shocking clip has amassed over 21 million views, with many doubting if the fish actually exist.
One surprised viewer asked: “Is that real?”
“I didn't even believe this was real until I looked at it,” commented another.
“Very beautiful, very powerful,” wrote an abundance of users, referencing a previously popular TikTok video starring a lumpfish too. In the clip, TikTok user @spadaniel44 explained what the fish was, before describing it as, “very beautiful, very powerful.”
The fish identified scientifically as Cyclopterus lumpus is commonly called lumpfish, or lumpsucker.
Lumpfish are usually found in the North Atlantic, but they can likewise be found down south in the Atlantic Ocean.
As displayed in the video, the fish has a ball-like shape with pelvic fins at the base that form suction discs which they use to adhere to rocks and different surfaces.
Although female lumpfish are larger than their male partners, they can actually grow to be as big as two feet in length and weigh up to 21 pounds.
Their lifespan is between six and seven years, but report has shown that some can live up to 13 years.
