Tably: Everything You Need To Know About The App That Can Tell If Your Cat Is Happy Or Sad

How can I tell if my cat is happy or sad?, is a question many cat owners like to ask.

Tably: Everything You Need To Know About The App That Can Foretell A Cat's Mood

Thankfully, there is a mobile application dedicated to helping you find answers that will give a clue to notoriously inscrutable cat moods, and tell if your cat is happy or not.

If your cat's mood has ever made you confused, it's time for us to have a little chat. Yes, you've probably have heard about an app called Tably — maybe from your friend or maybe online. If you've not heard about it, read on for all the details!

What Exactly Is Tably?

Tably is an app that uses a photo of a cat to determine its level of happiness based on facial expressions.

Formerly called Happy or Not, Tably was released by Sylvester.AI – a joint venture between Canadian artificial intelligence technology company Alta ML and The Bar G, a portfolio of companies involved in sectors ranging from sleep gadgets to ranching, to animal health.

How Does Tably Work?

The app picks up relevant points on a cats’ face, maps them out based on the Feline Grimace Scale (more on this later), and shoots out a reading – happy or not – along with a percentage. The percentage isn’t correlated to the level of happiness, but rather the level of confidence the machine has.

How Accurate Is Tably?

Tably was launched after the developers at AltaML discovered the Feline Grimace Scale (FGS), a scientifically-validated tool for assessing acute pain in cats based on changes in facial expression published in Scientific Reports in 2019.

Before Facial Grimace Face was discovered, cats were thought to be delphic creatures that did not give cues to signal if in pain. The truth is that these cues do exist – they’re just extremely subtle.

Paulo Steagall, lead author of the FGS publication and associate professor of veterinary anaesthesia and pain management at the University of Montreal said: “Depending on the cats’ muzzle, eyes, ears, whiskers, or head position, you can determine whether or not a cat is in pain.”

This discovery has given the team the idea to make an app that is accurate in fostering a healthier and happier lives for cats using machine learning.

According to the app’s senior product manager Michelle Priest, “With a high quality and full face front image of the cat, the accuracy is 97 per cent”.

Why Should You Use Tably?

According to AltaML’s vice president of product Chris O’Brien, “The big challenge with cats is that they don't express when they're in pain. They go and hide, whereas a dog will come in and whine and nuzzle you”.

So, if you find your cat in such a situation, you can use Tably to know why your cat is hiding. You can also use it to know how your cat is doing after having undergone a surgery.

Priest said: “It could be used to decide if you should take the cat to the vet or even an end-of-life decision. You might have had a cat for 18 years, but you don't want it to suffer. We also had this one guy say he wanted to find out why his cat was howling at night.”

When Will The Final Version Of Tably Be Rolled Out On Android And iOS?

The final version of Tably is out. You can download it here for iOS.

Tably has become part of a veterinarian's post-appointment follow-up process thanks to Alta ML and Sylvester.AI.

“It has kind of become its own entity. We’re starting with cats, although I think this idea could work with multiple species and grimace scales,” Priest says.

The Real Risks: Weighing Vaccine Side Effects vs. Deadly Diseases

Some dog owners express concern about vaccine risks. Meanwhile, preventable diseases continue to pose a documented threat. For example, a two-year pause in dog rabies vaccination campaigns in Haiti resulted in a five to eightfold increase in animal rabies cases within a single year, creating a public health crisis that required an emergency response. This event illustrates a central fact: the dangers of vaccine-preventable diseases are quantifiably greater than the known risks associated with vaccination. This article will address concerns about vaccine safety by examining the precise nature of both vaccine risks and disease threats, using verifiable data to support informed decision-making for your dog's health. The Biological Impossibility of Canine Autism The claim that vaccines cause autism in dogs is not supported by veterinary science due to fundamental biological reasons. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a human neurodevelopmental condition. Its diagnosis depends on asses...

5 Must-Ask Questions Before You Leave Your Dog at the Groomer

A 2022 study in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior noted that over 50% of dogs show signs of stress during grooming. While severe physical injuries are less common, a single preventable incident is one too many. Cases like those in Louisiana, where dogs received ocular chemical burns from misused shampoo at a licensed facility, demonstrate that a groomer’s marketing claims are not a guarantee of safety. Your dog’s well-being depends on the protocols you cannot see. The only way to evaluate them is to ask direct, specific questions. The goal is not to create conflict, but to identify competence and build trust based on transparent practices. 1. “What is your exact step-by-step protocol for protecting my dog’s eyes during the bath?” The difference between a safe groom and a dangerous one lies in the specifics of execution. Indicator of a Professional “Before the bath, we apply a sterile, vet-approved ophthalmic ointment to lubricate the eyes and create a barrier against shampoo. We av...

The Practical Path to a Pet-Friendly Rental: A Data-Backed Guide

“I would have lived in a tent before I surrendered my dog ,” says Valerie Ducharme, a renter who faced the Yukon's housing crisis with her Australian shepherd. Her sentiment is common. According to a 2023 Canadian Rental Housing Index report , nearly 40% of rental households include pets, yet a systematic analysis of listings in major Canadian markets shows that less than 30% explicitly welcome them. This gap creates a logistical and emotional crisis for responsible pet owners . This guide provides a concrete strategy based on documented landlord concerns and successful tenant approaches. It replaces hope with a structured plan. 1. Reframe the Conversation from Problem to Solution Landlords decline pets based on rational risk assessment. The documented primary concerns are: Property damage (chewed moldings, stained carpets) Noise disturbances leading to tenant turnover Liability issues (dog bites) Residual allergens affecting future tenants Your application must address these poin...
