Recent photos and video of a giant swordfish caught at Oyorokotor fishing settlement in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, detail the extent of cruelty facing fishes in Nigeria.
Hunger, rising costs of fish and sophisticated fishing techniques have enabled fishermen to catch more fish in less time - including fishing on one of the world's highly migratory and predatory fish (swordfish).
Swordfish which is also known as broadbills in some countries, is a large fish characterized by a long, flat, pointed bill.
Aside from the threat pose by almost 50 species of parasites to swordfish, killer whales, remoras, lampreys, cookiecutter sharks, and fishermen are also preying on these fishes, putting their population in danger.
Will the Nigeria government folds its arms and witness them in pots and restaurant entree or act swiftly to save them from fishermen? Only time will tell.
