Do You Want To Travel With Your Pets To EU Or Northern Ireland From January 2021? These Are The Requirements
Following Brexit, you will no longer be required to present a pet passport earlier than 10 days before travelling to Northern Ireland and EU. Pet passports were only acceptable when the United Kingdom was part of the European Union.
If you want to travel with your dog, cat, or ferret from United Kingdom to Northern Ireland or any country under the European Union from 1st January 2021, you must fulfill the following requirements:
- An animal health certificate (AHC) from vets officially allowed to inspect animals for export.
- Your dog, cat, or ferret must be vaccinated against rabies 21 days before travelling.
- Your dog must be treated against tapeworm if he is travelling to some countries with you.
- Your pet and assistance dog must enter the EU through a travellers’ point of entry, which includes all the major French ports such as Calais, Caen and Dunkirk
- Your pet must be microchipped, and protected against certain diseases.
This rule also applies to you if you're taking animals from England, Scotland and Wales to Northern Ireland
This change is necessary because the UK will have part 2 listed status under the EU Pet Travel Scheme after Brexit.
If you are stuck, your vet will be able to advise what you need to do in order to obtain the correct documentation to travel. You will also find the latest pet travel advice on gov.uk or by searching ‘pet travel’.”
According to the UK government website, there will be no change to the current health preparations or documents for pets entering Great Britain from the EU or Northern Ireland.
