This Is What You Should Know About Alaska Airlines Policy That Cracks Down On Emotional Support Animals

Alaska Airlines revised policy on emotional support animals

From January 11, 2021, Alaska Airlines will only permit service dogs that are trained to help people with disability on its flight.

If you have support pig, miniature horse, cat, monkey, or bird, find an alternative means of travelling with them because Alaska Airlines will not permit them on their flights.

This decision to clamp down on emotional support animal is in accordance with the new federal guidelines aimed at reining in a range of at times exotic animals that passengers have brought onto commercial planes as emotional support animals.

Before now, some passengers have abused the former guidelines by attempting to travel with animals that are unusual such as peacock, monkeys, pigs, etc.

Some of these passengers encouraged their animals to misbehave while on flights and abuse rules concerning service animals.

However, the new guidelines which came into effect after the 2nd December, 2020 ruling from the U.S. Department of Transportation grants airlines the authority to classify emotional support animals as pets rather than service animals.

Under the ruling, only dogs that meet specific training criteria are allowed as service animals for people with physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual or other mental disabilities.

Requirements For Traveling On Alaska Airlines With Emotional Support Animals

Alaska Airlines revised policy will only allow you to travel with a maximum of two service dogs and will include psychiatric service dogs.

You will also have to submit a form, developed by the Department of Transportation, that confirms that your dog is a service animal and has received appropriate training and vaccinations.

Benefits of the Revised Policy To Alaska Airlines Passengers

If you love to travel with Alaska Airlines, this new changes in their Airlines policy which is in accordance with the Federal guidelines on emotional support animal will benefit you in the following ways:
  • It will reduce disturbances onboard the flight
  • It will also reduce the number of passengers travelling with exotic animals that can cause problem to you.
  • If you're travelling with a qualified service animals, there will be enough space to accommodate them on the airline.
